The fire fighters confined their efforts. to saving the adjoining buildings, and timber stacks, covering about an acre of ground. The loss is estimated at £15,000, while a large number of men will be thrown out of work. The firemen had several narrow escapes. The city was thrown into darkness as the result of the flames melting fuses on the main feeder, while the telegraph lines connecting with Hawke’s Bay were broken.
