A fire which started in the kitchen nf the Central Hotel, Albert Street, Greymouth, was fortunately noticed in time this morning about 2.30 o’clock, or a serious conflagration might have resulted. One of the boarders, Mr W. Johnson, was awakened by the sound of breaking glass, and then, noticing the presence of smoke, discovered that the kitchen was ■ nbla"o. ' to'enhone alarm quickly brought the Fire who put out the nre in a lew minutes with one lead of hose. The cause of the fire was evidently an electric iron that had'' been resting on a table The flames reached to the ceiling and, the kitchen lining was partially destroyed, but the damage as a whole was not serious, though some would be caused by water.
