The weather on Saturday afternoon turned out very, unpleasant for foot- | hall, the rain making the grounds very wet and heavy. . On a slippery ground on Saturday, Grey Technical School’s team defeated Hokitika High School in the Newman Shield competition by 25 to nil. The winners were the heavier and faster side, but at the outset their opponents kept them out well. Hart led many Grey attacks, and in one ol these, along with Chalmers who made the opening, lie assisted in obtaining a try which Hart converted. Williams, (full hack), Morgan (five eighth) and: Cox (half), did good work for Hokitika, on the defensive, while the Grey half, and Collett (five eighth) a dashing player, opened up attacks. Chalmers, on the wing, gained the second try for Grey, far out. In tlie second spell, the visitors ran over the opposition. Leach sprinted through from half way for a try, which Hart converted. Then from a movement Hart started, a try was gained by Rose in the corner. Chalmers Soon after sent Leach away to score, and then the same player gave a pass to Davis, who went over. The final try was gained by Leach, after a dash, and it was converted, making tlie tally 25 to nil. Mr D. Heenan was referee. SENIOR B REPS. The game played .on Casj! Square between. Westland and Grey jvas spoilt by the rain and muddy state of the ground, and resulted in a draw, 8 points each. For Westland, Stopforth and Muir scot, ed tries, Stevenson converting. For Grey, Bunt and Saunders scored and the latter converted tlie first try. Mr E. Heenan was referee. JUNIOR REPS. Hokitika juniors travelled to Greymouth on Saturday where they proved victorious against the Grey team by 16 •mints to 3. For Westland, •Growcott, Gardyne, Schroder and Inglis , scored j tries, Hamilton converting two, and for i Grey Sloss scored a try. I SEDDON SHIELD. COAST DEFEATED BY 13—9. MOTUEKA July 26. Tlie Seddon Shield was retained by Golden Bay-Motueka Union reps today against tlie West Coast Union reps by 13 points to 9. The first minute’s play Martyn kicked a penalty goal for the West Const, for whom the half-back, Davidson, scored soon after. Clark registered a try for the Bay’s team before half-time. In the first part of the second half, the Bay’s forwards were superior, Holmwood and Stewart scoring tries, and the latter also potting a goal. Martyn kicked a penalty for the challengers. The end of the game was exciting, hut the football was not good. Tlie Bay backs were weak on attack. Tlie West Coast forwards could not see the distance out, hut the visiting hacks were in great form at the end. NORTH AUCKLAND TEAM. WHANGAREI, July 27. SOUTHLAND BEAT WANGANUI. INVERCARGILL, July 26. Southland successfully staved off the first of the season’s challenges for the Ranfurlv Shield to-day defeating Wanganui bv 19 to nil.
