There were visions at once 1 that Prime Minister Scullin had balanced his budget,' or some suclT announcement of import. However, the announcer continued in his agitated voice, “Australia has won the toss!’; There were loud cheers heard from within the studio. The incident bore evidence of the great hold the fortuneis. .pit the Australian XI at Home has on the mind of the Australian public. > Miss Agnes Stops, the national organiser for Women’s Institutes, will be visiting Hokitika on Monday next, and will meet the ladies of Hokitika at I St. Andrew’s Hall at 3 p.m. Miss Stops brings with her from England a most- interesting exhibition of crafts, including leather, raffia, gloves and other work. Thorpe, of Hokitika), Mrs Shearer, of Harihari, Mrs Major, of New Plymouth, and Misses L. and D.' "Jones, of W'ellihgton). The funeral is taking place this afternoon. o , ‘ Reports are being received that there has been of late a good deal of reckless shooting of black swan on the Okarito lagoon. The shooting has been wasteful in that the birds have been left where they fell, so that- the de- | struction is nothing short of wanton. Now that the authorities have had attention drawn to the matter, it is to be. hoped the practice will cease, failing which an example should be made of the offenders. The- preservation of the. bird-life of the 'country as far as possible should be the care of all, and it is a pity it is not possible to instill this into the minds of those disposed to shoot only for shooting sake and not for the. sport to. be derived from the pastime of the legitimate hunter,. Wilful destruction is certainly to be deprecated,, as in the instance referred to, and. the authorities cannot be to severe in the penalties meted out to those who are. found capable of the offence indicated.
