“The Sheffield Chamber of Commerce has issued figures which show that taxation on industry between 1913 and 1928 increased from £2 16s 9d per person employed to £lO 15s 6d. From this new load of‘taxes the foreign manufacturer is free. It is as though we levied a hostile tariff on British goods for our own market, and exempted the foreigner’s wares. No wonder that since 1913 the excess of imports over exports has risen from 20 per cent, to 45.” —“Daily Mail.”
