FOOTBALLER FINED. (By Telegraph, Per Press Association.; NEW PLYMOUTH, July 23. At the Magistrate’s Court, Edward Roebuck was convicted for assaulting a football referee during a match at Okato and fined £lO for assault and £1 for indecent language. He was also ordered to pay costs amounting to £2 12s. IN AND OUT. WELLINGTON, July 23. Robert ’Thomas Roberts, 51, veterinary surgeon, who has been in and out of gaol since 1917, was sentenced Jby Mr Page, to six months imprisonment. LATE SIR R. STOUT. MASTERTON, July 23. There was a' full ' attendance of meai hers of the legal profession in Masterton at the Courthouse to-day, when a tribute , was paid by the bench and bar to the memory of the late Sir Robert Stout. Mr J. Miller, S.M., presided. COUNCIL BYE-ELECTION. CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. The bye-election to-day for the Christchurch City Council caused by the death of Councillor F. Cooke, resulted in the return of Mr A. A. McLaclilan (Citizens’ Association) 9856; Mr G. M. Thurston (Labour) polling 5824, and Mr C. S. Trillo (Independent) 813, The strength of parties now on the Council is: Citizens 10, Laibo-ur G, Independent 1. At the last, election the parties were: Citizens 8, Labour S, Independent 1, and Labour, with the support of the Independent, had control. CHATHAM CUP. WELLINGTON, July 23. Mr H. H. Shareholders of Mahakipawa Gold fields Ltd., agreed last evening to a fur_ ther adjournment for twenty days, so that an effort could e made to raise the remaining £2500 of the £4OOO required to place the mine on a working basis. Between sixty and. seventy sharehold ers were present. THE WHISKY DUTY. WELLINGTON, July 24. ' Abolition of allowance-for under proof •spirits will result in an increase in .the; .price-of bottled whiskey by lOs per-two gallons case or Is 4d per bottle. The wine and spirit merchants..assert ciation decided to pass on the actual duty to the hotelkeeper. It is stated on reliable authority that the abolition of the allowance on under proof spirits will affect from 80 to 85 per cent of the whisky imported into the Dominion. PRISON ESCAPEE CAPTURED. DUNEDIN, July 24. In. the Rangipo Prison in 1920, Leo. Sylvester Hannan started to serve 18 months’ sentence for safe-blowing, but after four months escaped and nothing more was heard till his arrest was effected at Dunedin to-day. He was before the Court this morning on a charge of escapting from lawful custody and remanded till Monday.
