COAST DEFEAT NELSON. AFTER INTERESTING GAME. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) NELSON, July 23. The West Coast Rugby Union’s rep. team, who are proceeding to Motueka to play the Golden Bay-Motueka rep. team for the Secklon Shield, to-da.y played a try-out match here against the Nelson representatives. The game was an interesting one, and the West Coast team won by 21 points to lb, after an open and bright display. The West Coast backs were in good form, their straight running and accurate passing were the features ol the match. The score at half-time was 10 points all A Fong, the West Coast centre, who was the best back on the ground scored a try at the end of a spectacular passing movement. The West Coast winger Martyn also scored a try, after running for over half the length of the field. Martyn converted both of the tries in the second spell for the visitors. In the second spell the West Coasters notched three tries, and again showed good form. Dennehy, the West Coast wing-forward, played an outstanding game in this spell. He scored one of the tries. The other tries for the visitors were gained by the winger,' Pfahlert, and the five-eighth, Kennedy. Martyn converted one oF the tries in the second half, and the final score was: West Coast 21, Nelson 16. I ■ WANGANUI V. SOUTH CANTERBURY. The., Ipswich District- representative Rugby League; team met and .defeated the N.Z. league team at Ipswich to-day by ten points to three. The New Zealanders were somewhat sluggish in their form, but despite the scores they, gave a bettor display' of football than they did against Queensland on Saturday last. This was Ipswich’s fifth victory. i« the seven matches it has played against All Black teams. The weather was fine and the ground was hard. The attendance was poor.
WEST COAST RUGBY UNION.
The ordinary meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union was held last evening at Groymouth. Ngakawau Senior Football Club wrote stating that their Club would be making a trip to Greymouth on September 12th., and asking that a match he arranged for September 13th. or 17th. The matter was held over till a future meeting. The Principal of the Greymouth Technical College wrote that Hokitika D.II. School had agreed to play Tech on Saturday next, July 26th. in the first round of the .Newman Cup fixture, and asking to be freed from Club fixtures. This request was grantee The New Zealand Union notified that the complaint of the. West Coast Rugby Union re the appointment ol referees for British matches had been forwarded to' the Referees’ Appointment Board to he dealt with. Air Eggleton moved that the Rngb.v Union lodge a protest to the New Zealand Union-pointing out there was unnecessary delay, and asking them to give a definite decision on the protest from the Excelsior Club. Mr 1. Steel seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr I. Steel was appointed manager of the junior rep team to play Hokitika at Victoria Park on Saturday, the team to assemble at the Park Hotel at 2.30 p.m. Cobden Club were granted permission to travel to play Ruru Cub. The Secretary was instructed to wire the manager of the West Coast representative team congratulating them on their win at Nelson yesterday, and expressing the hope that they will repeat the performance against Golden Bay at Motueka on Saturday.
