“A CERTAINTY.”
PHAR LAP IN MELBOURNE CUP. “Ha! Ha! Ha!” “flow Are They Going to Beat Him?” “Pliar Lap in Cup.” These headings quoted trom the Sydney “Sportsman’-’ illustrate their opinion of Pliar Lap’s weight in the Melourne Cup. Commenting,on this,, tbe writer continues: —Good judges said that Pliar Lap would get anything from 10.0 to 10.2 in the Melbourne Cup. Handieapper Davis has given him 9.12. Carbine was beaten as a four-vear-old with 10.0 and the old codgers who say that Carbine is the best horse everyone* will sav that Pliar Lap is’nt in the Cup, as his 9.12 is a greater burden that Carbine’s 10.0. Carbine was entire and Pliar Lap is gelded, therefore, to 31b allowance. But “Sportsman” is out to tell tin world that Pliar Lap is a better horse than Carbine and we cannot see how he’s going to be beaten in the bßonington two-miler, provided he is at his best. Phaf Lap won the King's Cup in Adelaide with 9.5. He hod to carry this weight because the. handieapper conidn’t give him any more under the conditions of the race. Phar Lap just played with his oppo Bition. Seventeen pounds over w.f.n Phnr Lnp carried when he took the King’s Cup. His 9.12 in the Melbotirne Cup represents 151 b, over the scale, ro that, relatively speaking, he is 21b. better off in tbe Melbourne Cup than was the case in Adelaide. Look at It any way vou like, Phar Lap is not badly treated in the Cup. lie lias a frightfully big task ahead of him, but nothing lias proved bevond him since, he was beaten in the last Melbourne Cup. How be was beaten in tho last twomiler passe-s understanding. He had an easier task in the last Cun, no doubt, but James Edward Pike will be on him this year and J.E.P. will not fight, h’m as did “Strangler” Lewis- last November. Pliar Lap has 10.0 in the Caulfield Cup, but it’s safe to say he wil* nnss this over and concentrate on the two mil<?s Cup. • ’ And punters had hptter concentrate on him also. Tbey’ll probably be sorry if they don’t. i,' ' ' Woods’ Croat Peppermint Cure First aid for Coughs. Colds, Influenza
