NATIVE LAND COURT
MR MEREDITH EXPLAINS. AUCKLAND, July 19. AYitli reference to the withdrawal of the Crown Solicitor (Air Meredith.) from, the Native Land Court yesterday, Air Aleredith fully explained his attitude before lie withdrew. He submitted thait the enquiry should be confined to aspects of the Orakei land : purchase mentioned by the Maoris in their petition. Approximately £IO,OOO had been paid the Alaoris for the land, but they were now- suggesting that when they received the money they- also received a promise that the land for which they were being paid would be returned ,to . them.. He was prepared to consider that contention., but if any other matter were introduced lie was prepared, after consulting the Native Lands Department, to withdraw from the enquiry. Judge Acheson said that Air Meredith, at a previous hearing, had agreed to consider other questions. Air Aletredith. denied this. When he withdrew, he was accompanied by the representatives of the Government Departments present.
