RUGBY LEAGUE

QUEENSLAND WIN. (Australian Press Association) BRISBANE, July 20. The Rugby League football match yesterday, between the- New Zealand and Queensland representatives, was played lmrc yesterday. The score was close and the play was fairly even. The New Zealand team was ns follows : —Backs: Dufty, Brisbane, Dodds, Wntene, Amos, Gregory, Abbot, Forwards: C-alder, Stephenson, Trnutvetter, Griffith, Clarke and Eckhoff. The final scores were: Queensland 14, New Zealand 11. Up to the closing stages of the game the play on either side was anything but brilliant, but there was excitement in the last few minutes, which made up for much of the previous stodginess. Tlie New Zealanders did not greatly impress by their showing in the first half of the game. For one thing, combination was lacking and the visitors appeared to be suffering a handicap through tlie inability-of some of their players to take the field. However, in tlie latter stages the New Zealanders rallied and they were always a source of danger to the home side. The.Queenslanders, who included seven of the men who toured England last season, were also unable to get going, aijd the visitors held them well np to half-time, when the score was 9—6 in the favour of New Zealand. The visitors’ score included three goals kicked by Dufty, while Eckhoff scored a try. In the second half, the play was more entertaining, with the New Zealanders harassing the home side and frequently making dangerous bursts. Tlie New Zealanders, however, were unable, however, to contend with a final, brilliantly sustained effort by the Queensland team, and after the scores had been level at eleven all for several minutes, the home players scored a try which gave them, the game. The best forwards on. the New Zealand side were Eckhoff, Ca-ldler and Clarke, and the best backs were Gregory, Dobbs and Watene. Dufty was safe and sure at full back. In the second half New Zealand’s only score was a goal kicked by Dufty.
