In the House of Lords, Lord Astor moved thate in view of the full enfranchisement of Avomen and of their admission to the House of Commons and the Cabinet, the House should Aveloome adm.isi.'.iion of peeresses to the House of Lords on an equality with men.

Lord Hamvorth opposed the motion and said it would only add to the confusion and prevent real reform.

Lord Ruckmaster said there aaus no adequate reason Avhy..the twenty peeresses in their oavii right should not participate in the proceedings. Reform of the Chamber Avas only attainable one step at a time. The admission of Avomen Avould be the first good step. Lord Birkenhead said filial there Avould be reform in the Chamber some day, and when it came the most sanguine could not hope to exclude Avomen. In the meantime he hoped that they AA’ould reject the motion. The motion avus defeated by 53 to 49. GOVERNMENT VERY ANGRY. AT MII BECKETT’S PROTEST. LONDON, July 18. The Government, according to the “News Chronicle,” takes a most serious vieAv of the- Beckett outrage. “The Times calls it: “The rape of the Mace.” It is stated thate the Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, may move a motion recording the House’s condemnation of his action.

The “Sketch” says that steps haA'e already been taken to expel Mr Becketet from the Labour Party.
