THE £250 REWARD
Will the Underwriters’ Association be able to pay the promised reward of £250 for the arrest of the “firebugs” now that there has been a change at the head of the Police Department? It is considered that the new Commissioner may make a recommendation in favour of Constable Gillum, who arrested the men. The acceleration in pay granted to Constable Gillum would amount in five years to £63 18s. A new constable gets los a. day for the first thpee years, and los Gd a day for the next three years, when his pay reaches 16s. Constable Gillum is receiving 16s a day after a year’s service. On March 26th. Constable Gillum formally applied under the regulations for the reward offered for the arrest of. the "firebugs” and has not made any application since then. The regulations say that a member of the force, cannot receive any reward or gratuity except with the consent of the Commissioner. In his case the Commissioner’s consent was not forthcoming. It has beep suggested that the reward should Ito paid to Constable Gillum’s mother, who lives in Christchurch.
