The special attraction to-night will be the annual ball of the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade which takes place in the Soldiers’ Hall, dancing commencing at 8.30 o’clock. The arrangements for the function are most complete and should assure the thorough enjoyment of patrons.

The tonnage hauled through the Otira tunnel during the past week, ended Saturday July 12th., amounted to 13,448 tons. For the corresponding week of 1929, a total of 12,021 tons were railed, whilst in 1928, 12,348 tons were hauled through the tunnel.

Questioned at Christchurch on Monday, the Hon Mr Ransorh stated: Regarding the proposed national park in South Westland- including the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, that the gelieral principle, of making such scenic reservations as this had his heartiest support provided,'' of'course, that no capital expenditure was involved. He had heard of the; project for the South Westland Park, but it bad not been brought before his notice in detail.

“I am by no means , depressed by the great difficulties with which I am confronted,” said the Hon W. A. Veitcli, Minister of Railways, to a deputation at Christchurch on Monday. “These difficulties are severe and it will take some fairly-drastic action on my part and a great deal of consideration if they are to be overcome. But there isn't the .slightest doubt in my mind +bnt the finances cif the Railway Department are going to improve in such a way as to ease materially the burden of taxation.” % .

“I look upon this as one of the prey cautions taken by the Railway Department for the safety of the public, and so long as the regulation remains in force we have to see that it is obeyed,” said Mr E. D. The Greymouth Harbour Board at its ' meeting last evening decided to proceed with the Work of extending- both' the north and south breakwaters. A report by the Engineer. Mr T. A. The death occurred at •' Westland Hospital '-this morning after a short illness of Mrs Maud. Jones, wife of Mr Thomas Henry Jones.,'of Ruatapu. Deceased was a native ot Stafford and 40 years of age.
