WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD
MONDAY, JULY 14th
Tie Board met at 8.30 p.m. Present: Messrs J, J. Breeze (Chairman), G. Davidson, A. R. Elcock, R. Meharry, W. Jeffries, W. Evenden, T. W. Duff and H. Wells. Leave of absence was granted Mr Turner fair three mouths owing to illness, and an apology was made lor the absence of Mr Keenan. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.
MOTION OF CONDOLENCE
The Chairman moved that a letter of sympathy and condolence be forwarded to the family of the late Sir Joseph Ward.—Seconded by Mr Jeffries and carried in silence, members stand-

From Dr Valintine, Department of Health, various circulars and acknowledgement of appointment of Mr J. J. Breeze as Chairman for the ensuing two years; asking that every care he taken in expenditure on capital ao--1 count; notifying that subsidies on be--1 quests and voluntary contribution will | not be paid in excess of the estimates j for the year, all application* for sll'b- | sidy to be made to the Minister of ' Finance.—Received. Mr Evenden said the question of the granting of subsidies would have a particular hardship for Kumara, if the subsidy were upheld. He moved that a letter he sent to the Department asking for the actual position in regard to the j subsidies on medical association contributions. Mr Jeffries seconded the motion, fie pointed out the grave ‘importance of the question ol subsidy to the Board, and po'nted out that in the event bf subsidies not being granted, that it would perhaps mean a further levy on the contributing local bodies at the end of the year. After discussion the motion was agreed to. j From same stating that he was of ' opinion that! the present time was inopportune to consider any increases in salaries and asking that a former letter be held over meantime.—Received .
From Railway Department, Greymouth, stating lease of railway reserve was now being granted to the Board.—Received. . From Dr Bell. Harihari, notifying he had returned to duty on the Ist. inst. —Received. From Tnangnhun. Hospital Board stating the .subsidy to the Waiuta Hospital had been discontinued by the Department, and asking for particulars of subsidy granted to the Board, —Received and particulars to be supplied. From Miss A. L. Jones, resigning position as clerk to the Board, Received. The Chairman moved that the resignation he accepted with regret. Mr Duff seconded the motion, stating Miss Jones had been a most trustworthy officer hud lie wished her every success in the future. Mr Jeffries endorsed, stating Miss Jones lmd been a loyal employee, and he wished her well. Mr Davidson also supported the motion, appreciating the excellent services rendered.
■ Previous to the motion being put, Mr Duff moved tliat a month’s salary be granted in lieu of holiday.—Seconded by Air Jeffries and agreed to. The motion of acceptance of the resignation Avas then agreed to. Mr Duff moved that applications be invited for the position at a salary to commence of £65 per year.—Seconded by the .Chairman. Air E-lcork moved an amendment that the salary he £7B—Seconded by Air Davidson. Mr Jeffries thought £65 was a very fair offer for the position, and at that figure there would he plenty of applications. The amendment Ava,s lost and the motion was agreed to. From E. Freitas applying for annual holiday.—Received and granted. From Secretary, Shire of Braybrook, Victoria, advising Board to dispose of small section at Sunshine. Victoria, which was too small for building purposes.—Received Messrs Jeffries and Mehnrry offered to purchase the area at £2. This- offer Avas accepted by the Board. From Auditor-General, forwarding balance sheet duly audited and certified a.s correct.—Received. Applications were received from seven persons for the position of night nurse and Miss Ruth Raynor, of Reefton, Avas appointed.
REPORTS
From Produce Department, notifying the receipts for the month were £169 3s 4d, including 12 ton 10 cut. of turnips and llScloz. eggs, valued at £l3 6s Bd.—Received a.s very satisfactory. The House Committee reported that the iioav sterilizer had been placed in position and was giving every satisfaction. The X-ray plant had been completed and was proving highly satisfactory. OAving to extra Avork for Air ToAvers, he recommended Air Holley he appointed gardener. The supply of milk for the hospital Avas continuing very satisfactory, and the stock Avas all in good condition, the* whole of the necessary fodder having been gi’OAvn on the land at the institution. —Received. Afr Mehnrry appreciated the good Avork that Air Davidson was doing at the hospital. Accounts amounting to £592 Is 5d were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported receipts £546 4s 9d, payments £742 17s lid. credit balance £202 1.7 s lid.—Received.

Admitted during June, 16 males. 22 females, total treated 39 males, 4] females---80. Discharged cured 16 males. 21 females; relieved 5 males, 2 females; died. 1 male, 2 females. Total discharged, 22 males, 2o females—47. In hospital. ?>Oth. June, 17 males. 16 females-—O6. In hospital for over two months—B ma les, 3 females—llßeceived. The next meeting was fixed for Mon-, da-v, Aug. 11th. It was resolved to call a meeting of ladies in connection with the annual, ball, to be held on Monday next at 7 p.m. It, was resolved to close the Cancer Fund Appeal on July 31st. and to notify accordingly.; The Board rose at 9.30 p.m.
