AUCKLAND, July 14
There was a liereely-specta culaf ■wrestling match before a crowded house at the Town Hall this/ evening. Tom Alley (America) met Scotty McDougall (Scotland). Alley won the contest obtaining' tlie only fall of the bout in the Mast round. The two men. were very evenly matched and for the first four' rounds they gave a fine exhibition of fast, scientific wrestling. They were allowed a fair’ amount of latitude by the referee) and front'd the' filth round onwards, the contest''became a fierce struggle, with their feet being used freely on occasions, -if-'’---
A climax came in the seventh round, when McDougall escaped from an armpull by rolling through the ropes. Al-’ ley followed him. Then they fought fiercely^outside the ropes, disregarding the referee. ,/r The seconds attempted to and one of Alley’s supporters, L. Xatlor. received a blow on the month, which necessitated the insertion of two stitches. Tlie round ended just as McDougall, was persuaded to re-hntei; : the ring, Tlie end of the contest came eaidy' in the Bth. round, Alley securing-a: toe hold, and a body press, and forcing his opponent’s shoulders to the, mat.
COSTENARUS DEFEATS McLEOD.
SYDNEY, July 14
George McLeod and George Costenaru:.s (the Greek) met in h wrestling match at the Leichhardt Stadium this evening, which resulted in a popular win for Costenarus. McLeod obtained the first fall in the third round, but thereafter C'osterarus held the upper hand, gaining much praise by putting' the short arm s.'is-sors hold upon his' opponent, in one of which holds McLeod went as white as marble iii making strenuous efforts tie get away from" tlie Greek’s hold. The Greek continued to persevere, and McLeod was in' 1 trouble soon after with a short lee' scissors. The referee asked McLeod 'if he was prepared to give in, but lie hung on indefinitely,. McLeod pluokilv' refused to give iii from the “stopper” or kneelock. as it is commonly called; though he was' in a" niahty predicnment.
