HOTEL BURNT

CHRISTCHURCH, July 14
An old land mark, Roileston Hotel, near the junction of the main south line and Midland line, was detsroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The licensee, R. H. Davies, his wife and three children escaped narrowly with few belongings.
INQUEST VERDICT,
CHRISTCHURCH, July 14
At the inquest into the deatli of Mrs isobel Mabel Stanley, 45, found dead in a house oil June 28, the Coroner returned a verdict of suicide by gas poisoning. The husband’s evidence showed the woman had been worrying over . a fatal accident a year ago, when a car driven by her killed a man in Manchester Street.
MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED
CHRISTCHURCH, July 14
Air A. R. Duff, 18, was hospitalled yesterday evening with severe head injuries and unconscious as a result fo his motor cycle skidding in loose shingle at Rakaia, His condition is serious.
THEFT CHARGES.
ASHBURTON, July 14.
The maximum penalty of six months’ gnoj was imposed on William Leah, a middle aged labourer, for theft of £2O the property of a fellow worker, on a farm at Eiffelton. For the conversion of a bicycle the property of the same owner, he was convicted and discharged. • The money was taken from under a mattress on Friday, and the arrest was made at Tima.ru on Saturday. The cycle and £7 13s was recovered. > .
CAR ACCIDENT.
DARGAVILLE, July 14
On Sunday afternoon a car driven by Peter Danko, who had as passengers N. Carson, J. Johnson and W. Sitiey, were returning along the West Coast beach from Alongonui Bluff, when it ran over a ledge of rocks and turned over, with the result that Carson suffered severe-injuries to his head and nose, necessitating the insertion of several stitches. The others escaped with minor briuses and cuts. Members of the party walked ten miles along the beach, for assistance and, were brought into town which they readied, at a late hour, and Carsoh’s injuries were attended to by a doctor. He had a narrow escape but is now progressing satisfactorily. y A breakdown car proceeded to the spot this morning to salvage the car, which when left ..was upright on its wheels. When found it- had been turned over by .the tide.
PATHETIC DEATH,
AUCKLAND, July 14
Pathetic circumstances surround the accidental death of James Kimm and serious condition of his wife, both aged 78, of 39, Grange Rd. Mt. Eden. The elderly couple fell asleep in a sitting room before a portable gas heater on Friday evening and were found insensible early on Saturday morning. Kimm received fatal burns through his foot slipping into the heater, while his wife is in a semi-conscious condition at the hospital. The couple were found by a neighbour 10 hours later.
DRUNKEN DRIVER.
PALMERSTON N. July 14.
These cases are getting for too frequent, observed the Magistrate when convicting W. H. Lacey, by occupation a salesman, on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. Every day one reads in the papers of similar cases. They must be 'stopped, Defendant was fined £ls and license cancelled for six months.
ASSAULT CHARGE. ■ GREYMOUTH, July 14
T’noptif trouble between parties working the Jubilee co-operative mine at Kapahoe led to an assault last Thursday by George Stanton on the mine minager, William Wallwork. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Stanton was fined £2 with costs for assault and was also fined £5 with costs on a charge of employing a man without permission of the mine manager. Lino Cammiss was fined £1 for an assault on Walhvovk,
FOUND DEAD. HAMILTON, July 14
The body of Samuel Burton, M.R.C. V.S., aged 60, a well-known veterinarian, was found dead with a gunshot wound in the head. At the inquest a verdict of suicide while depressed and in ill-health was returned.
