Under a broiling sun, the tempera, ture reaching 100, Bobby Jones wont out in 34 and back in 37 and W, Cox, with exactly the same scores tied with' .Tones. are leading a field of 142. Horton. Smith took -a par 36 both ways, t3'ing with Geo. Smith and Harry Cooper with scores of 72. The-others wore Irwin and Ottoman 73, John Goodman, MeFarlane 74, Milhorn 76. Tolley, Von Elmighy, and Harden 81, Tolley is the only overseas chab longer. Five thousand cheered Jones, who missed half a dozen putts by inches. There was keen excitement as Jones and Horton Smith battled stroke for stroke on 'the incoming journey. Jonas was a stroke -behind with two r,o go, but' each one of these Horton Smith lost. Goodman who knocked Jones out of the national championship last year thrilled the crowd, going out m 33, but lie returned in 41. Goodman was flustered by thousands who turned to watch him, after trooping home with Jones.
