Whitebait has made its appearance in the Orawati river at Westport, a fair catch for this time of the year being made on Friday.

Black swans arc very plentiful in the district ljust now. Some illicit shooting is going on, and wounded birds have been seen in Mahinapua Creek and Lake. The police have been advised of the position, and will prosecute any offenders shooting illegally.

A holiday excursion to the Franz Josef Glacier will probably be arranged by the Railway Department to take place during September.
