MAGISTRATE’S COURT

GREYMOUTH, July 8

; At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Mr Wi Me Id rum, S.M. dealt with a number of charges, including the following :

DRUNKEN DRIVER

A young man named Thomas Francis Lean.was charged with being under the influence of liquor whilst in charge of a motor car. The charge arose out of the accident which happened on Saturday afternoon whilst defendant was driving a Fiat car to Greymouth, when he collided with a telegraph post, considerably damaging the car. Commenting on the case, Mr Moldr.um held that the charge had been sustained. It was unfortunate that a . ong - man such as defendant, should and . himself in court. He could, not. However, overlook the fact that there were too many accidents caused by motorists who were under the influence of liquor. Defendant would he fined CIO with £1 11s 2d witnesses’ expenses.

CHARGE OF MISCHIEF

James Leslie Guy was charged with mischief, it being alleged that on March Bth. he..damaged a picket fence, the property of " William McNeil, to the extent of 10s. He pleaded guilty. The- Magistrate entered a conviction md Lined Guy £1 with 10s costs, and ordered the amount of the damage also to he paid to McNeil.

THEFT OF. TIMBER

William McTaggart was charged that at Duijoilie on or about June 3rd. he stole a piece of timber, the property of . the New Zealand .Government vatcd iit os.

The Magistrate stated that he was not satisfied with accused’s explanation. He had said he got the timber front under his house hut it was of a kind that would not be used in the construction of a house. The marks in it appeared, to have been sufficient to enable McGrath to~"ideriti?y it as the Bx 4 plank that, was Taken off the bridge. He must find that the,! case had been proved- and convicted and fined McTaggart £l, with £^ ( 3s lOd witnesses’ .expenses, and also vi ordered to pay os, the value of the timber, to the Government. ’•

LICENSING ACT

The licensee of Revington’s Hotel was charged with having had the premises open, and having, exposed and sold liquor after hours-.on June 14th. while the barman was. also' charged with unlawfully supplying liquor. Mr M. James, who appeared for defendants pleaded guilty to the charge on behalf both of the licensee and'bariman. The*Magistrate imposed a fine of £2 with 10s costs on the licensee, and £1 with costs on the barman, the other two charges being withdrawn.
