MORE DISMISSALS
FROM RAILWAY SHOPS;
FORTY-FIVE AT LOWER; HUTT.
WELLINGTON, July 5. It was reported to-day that fortyfive of the men employed at the Railway Workshops, Lower Hutt had been dismissed. In answer to a question this morning,, the Minister of Railways Mr Veitcli) stated that it was true that, a number of men had been dismissed, but he was not able to say how many; He added that;he did not wish to com--'inejut on the position, excet to say that .the reasons for these dismissals were the same as in the case of those at, Aldington and eleswliere.
A PROTEST,
Ai a meeting of' the Railway •Tradesmen's Association and the Amai.gamated Society of Railway- Servants at- Lower Hutt, yesterday, a resolution of protest against the dismissals was carried. .- ; Jt is stated that it was most unfair to dismiss .men before legislation on the lines suggested by the Unemployment Committee bad been passed.

WELLINGTON, July 5
Commenting on the reported dismissals of 45 employees from the Railway Workshops at Lower Hutt, Mi Nasli M. P., strongly condemned tin method adopted by the Government. One of the dismissed men, said Mr Nash, has been in the Railway service for twenty years, and to be suddenly discharged was a cruel return for faithful , service. If that policy were continued, it would appear that ii 6 member of the Civil Service >as safe.

THIRTY POT OFF AT ADDINGTON
;t. - V. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7:V ‘Notice of 1 the termination of theiremployment was given to thirty employees at the Addington Railway Workshops this evening. The men affected are casuals, who have. been., in the employ of the Department for varying lengths of time. The Workshops Manager states no permanent men have been put off All .the. meg were 'emergency casuals,;, who bad been' engaged in work from 'day to day, and others were term casuals, of whom many had been employed for some time. There were some returned soldiers among those dismissed; Forty-five other men were dismissed from the Workshops a fortnight ago;
A PROTEST,
-• CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. The Christchurch City Council tonight carried the following'resolution : That this Council emphatically protests against the action of the Government in increasing unemployment by dismissing men fr.om the Railway Workshops and other departments ■without making.provision for their employment in other directions.
