CREMATED.

NEW PLYMOUTH, July 4
The news of the cremation of the remains of Sir Maui Pomare has sent a wave of horror through the Maoris of North Taranaki, who, for some cays have been making arrangements for a huge tangi when the body was brought to New Zealand, and buried in his birthplace, north of Waitara.
A leading Maori states the whole of his race is pained to an indescribable extent .over the cremation, thus Violating as it does, sacred Maori tradition.
“We hope and pray,’ he says, “that such a thing will not be introduced into our race. It would have been far better if his body had been laid to rest in California. I am speaking right from the back of the heart of my people.” A meeting of the Maoris is being called this week-end, with the object of discussing the position, and the general feeling is that the cremated remains should be kept in Wellington, ■as they are not wanted in Taranaki.
