AUSTRALLAN COAL DUTY.
(Australian ‘Press Association.)
SYDNEY, July 5
The colliery proprietors of New South Wales are hopeful that the New Zealand agitation for a duty on Australian coal will not be persuaded with, as it will definitely check overseas trade. It is pointed out there i§ a misconception in the Dominion to the effect that local coal is bounty fed bv the Commonwealth at a shilling per ton. The fact is this concession does not at all apply .to the coal intended for New Zealand. On the other hand if duty is imposed there at all, there will be agitation for a retaliatory duty there on New Zealand timber, which is said to employ a far greater number of employees than the coal industry.
