GOVERNOR’S INTEREST.
“MONEY IN THE FAMILY.’’
/‘Since my .arrival in this -country I have been much interested in the possibility of its providing in days to come all the timber required (and in every respect suitable-) for. the packing for export both of butter and of fru.it, and I am glad to say that the Government is taking steps with this aim in. view,” remarked Lord Rledisloe/at the Fruitgrowers’. ..Conference a.t./Wellington. “It is wq.ll that you should in this,-as in other directions, ‘keep the money in the family.’ Prompt seasonal delivery by the local satyinills will always be. a condition of the: success of any such project. “Many of the subjects which you will quite -rightly discuss at your conference "it would not he proper for Pie "to" explore with, you, as they -involve questions ~pf Government policy, ..hut on research, problems,, to which some of your remits refer, I can -speak with greater freedom, and having until, recently had under my supervision all the agricultural research work in the Old Country I cannot fail to lx> particularly interested in that now in progress, with a view to your ultimate economic benefit, at the Cawthron Institute and elsewhere in this Dominion. I note with especial satisfaction the references in your •programme to the work of Mr Hatton and his colleagues at East Mailing in regard to the standardisation of root stocks ol apples and-pears, for I can confidently :'say that no more valuable research ’work than this ijx connection with the fruit industry has-.- been,, carried through anywhere in the world during the last decade, and none is more calculated to effect’ that- uniformity of type., both of tree and fruit, which is essential to confident commercial success and the lack of. which has seriously handicapped the efforts of progressive- fruitgrowers. I shall he pleased, if desired, to assist in keeping New Zealand growers contiguously informed as io the resuits of this valuable research work.”
