COOK MEDALLION
DISCOVERY NEAR WAIRAU.
BLENHEIM, July 2,
An interesting find near the Wairau River on the site of an extensive old Maori Pa is reported by Air Charles Woolf, a nephew of the Harbour Board pilot, Captain Vendore. It coinsists of a medallion struck to commemorate the departure from England in 1772 of Cook’s ships, Resolution and Adventure. The obverse side contains a representation of the head of George Til. w,ith the wording “George 111. King of Great Britain, France and Ireland,” etc. On the reverse side is a representation of the two ships. The Resolution and Adventure- sailed from England in March 1772.
Captain Cook brought some of the medals with him and presented them to high Maori chiefs, urging them to wear them as a mark of the favour of the great white King.
