AUCKLAND, Juon 30

Members of the athletic team which will represent Australia at the Empire Games in Canada next month are passengers by the Aorangi, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney to-day. They will Ibe joined here by the New Zealand representatives. According to the manager, Mr H. It. ,Weir, the team is one of the'"best that has ever represented Australia at an athletic . meeting overseas. It includes IT. It. Pearce, Olympic sculling champion;. W. M. Whyte, Australian mile champion; H. A. Baseom.be, Australian 440 yards champion; A. J. Hillhouse, Australian 10,000 metres champion; O. A. Golding, New South Wales 440 yards champion; V. O. Gallagher, Australian middle-weight and heavyweight boxing champion,; and W. Cameron, Australian sprint and backstroke swimming champion. Mr IT. Fargher accompanies the team as trainer and coach. “I consider the team should do very well at the Games,” Mr Weir said. “It could have been improved by the addition of G. It. Hyde, long-distance running champion; A. J. Watson, hurdles champion; and J. A. Carlton, sprint champion, but these three veie prevented from coming owing to business reasons. No difficulty was experienced in raising funds to scud the team away. In view of the present period of depression it was not considered advisable to make a public appeal, hut there was a ready response from sporting bodies throughout the Commonwealth.”

Much was expected from Pearce in the sculling events, Mr Weir said, and it was also thought that the runners and swimmers might meet with considerable success. Members of the team were delighted with the prospect of travelling with the New Zealand representatives, some of whom they had met personally. AUCKLAND, June 30. The. New Zealand team for the Empire Games assembled to-day. Air R J. Hobbs, the manager, said it appeared that the best prospects were in the rowing crew, winch showed the fastest pace yesterday for the first time and delighted their coach.
