An Ashburton press wire states:—A link .with early Westland and Ashburton has been severed by the death of Mr Albert Roberts, 94 years of age. He was a native of Tasmania. He joined the Bank of New Zealand at Christchurch, and from 1869 to 1874 he managed the Greenstone and Hokitika branches, he having had a personal knowledge of Sullivan, the bushranger, and having associated with the late Rt. Hon R, J. Seddon in political activities. From 1874 to 1879, he managed the. Ashburton branch of the Bank, retiring then to enter upon other activities.

At the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth yesterday, Robert Fairlie Bennett, a roadman of Arthur’s Pass was charged with theft of a rug valued at £1 from a car that was stranded in McGrath’s Creek in January. Bennett stated that he found the rug on WjO roadside two months after the car was stranded, and overlooked the matter of returning it. He ‘ denied removing the brand. He admitted having been in Court on a previous ocacsion, charged with a similar offence: The S.M., in fining accused £1 said that ho could not accept the explanation that he did not intend tc steal the rug. An order was made for the return of the rug to the owners. For theft of coal from railway trucks at Kamata, three residents, John'Griffin, James Martieh and Frederick Gill were convicted, the former being v-fined 10s and the two latter 20s.
