A FATAL FALL

AUCKLAND, June 27
Lester Gardiner, aged 17, whoso home is at Gore, fell 100 feet from the -fifth floor of the Y.M.C.A. to the basement of the light well, and died from his injuries.
FALSE REPRESENTATION
AUCKLAND. June 27
William Thomas Watson, 41, plumber, who was remanded from Opotiki yesterday appeared a.t the Atuc.kla.nil Police SOour/t, to-day charged with obtaining 5s 6d by falsely representing that the ticket, purporting to be issued by the Golden Casket Art Union. Brisbane, was genuine. Watson was further remanded on £10" bail after the ’Chief Detective stated other charges were pending and that Watson got the casket tickets printed in New Zealand, quite a number being sold.
RAMPS AT CROSSINGS
WELLINGTON, June 27
A deputation representing the City and Suburban Highways Board waited on t.l’o Minister of Railways to-day, in reference to the question of the construction of ramps at railway crossings.
In reply to the deputation, the Minister stated that at the present , time the Government was cutting out all expenditure on new works, and in the circumstances, :t was not possib.e for him to make any promise that the work of erecting the ramps asked for would be proceeded with. The promise made by Sir Jose oh Ward, that the Government would be willing to bear two thirds of the cost if the local bodies woukl hear one avould however, be honoured.
ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SHOWS

At a meeting of the of the Royal Agriultural Society’, it decided that the' Royal Show in 1931 he held at Christchurch. Th-is year it is to be m Hawke’s Bay. in October. In order to encourage entries from' the South Island at the HawkelS Bay show, the Council decided to , pay all die steamer freight on stock .shipped 'From the .South Island. Messrs J. Begg (Dunedin), A, Hodgqri TBlenlieim) were appointed to fill two vacancies on the Council of the Society.
POSTMAN REMANDED
"WELLINGTON, June 27
William George McLean, postman with ten years’ service, married, with two children, pleaded guilty to-day to the theft of letters containing money, postal notes and a cheque, between February 10 and June 20 this year. It was stated that the postal notes and cheoue were destroyed' by accused. There were seven charges. Magistrate Page remanded accused till Tuesday, in order that he could consider the case.
CHINESE defrauded: WELLINGTON, June 27. Representing himself .as representing a dealer, Keith El ford Craig, 29, defrauded an Island Bay Chinese of sacks valued at £2. Tie was to-day -necl £5, in default one month’s imprisonment. .
SHOPPER’S THEFT. WELLINGTON, June 27
A plea that he had gone into the laundry to change a £1 note did not avail Samuel McSliane. 56, tailor, charged .wijth stealing it 'from Nang Sun and Co.'
, Ling Ch.ee gave evidence that coming back frqm making, a purchase, and finding accused under the counter with note in his hand, a struggle ensued.
Evidence was given by other witnesses.
Accused had a list of previous sentences and was given three mouths’ imprisonment.
OBITUARY
WELLINGTON, June 28,
The death is reported of a leading stockbroker, Mr Arthur Warburton. The deceased, who was 82 years of age, joined the staff of the Bank b'f i\ew South Wales. He rose to be a manager at Fielding and Te Aro, but resigned about 1353 and established the sharebroking and financial agency firm of Arthur Warburton and Co. He had considerable business interests in Wellington. For 22 years he was a member of the Board of Governors of Wellington College and the Girls’ High School.
