THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
THE GENERAL, OUTLOOK. As to the general financial outlook, Sir George Elliot’s warning as Chairman of Directors of the Bank of New Zealand, docs not really amount tO' much more than what the Prime Minister himself has said. Sir George says, this country, if it is not careful, maygo the wav of Australia, hut surely there is too much prudence and common sense for that to happen. While, however, there is no 1 need to be gloomy, Sir George’s warning’should be heeded. It is a wise call for hard work and thrift. Economical government, local and national,- is what the country needs most of all, but it would be a profound mistake to regard this task of meeting the difficulties of the time e as one purely for a vague entity called the State. It. is a task imposed- on all citizens. Star, ' 4
