BIBLE-IN SCHOOLS LEAGUE

CONFERENCE WITH ROMAN CATHOLICS.

CHRISTCHURH, June 23

Provided that details are completed ut a conference between representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and the Bihle-in-Seliools’ League nest week, the Roman Catholics in New .Zealand are expected ho withdraw their objections to legislation providing for systematic religious instruction in State schools. Negotiations between the two partes have been proceeding for some time, and the progress made suggests that a settlement may be possible. The Roman Catholic- attitude, it is understood, is not antagonistic to Protestant children in . the State schools being given religious .instructions provided Protestants .makh themselves responsible for it, and it is expected that any such legislation will contain such provision. Mr H. Holland, ALP., said to-day that he did not think a Bill dealing with the subject would come before Parliament this session. It would be ■of little use at the present stage, for there were about 50 members from the different parties, opposed to the measure. However, if the Roman Catholics were going to be generous enough to modify or withdrew their objections a Bill might prove more acceptable to the House.
