LATE LOCALS.
The first heavy fall of snow for soma years was experienced in Christchurch mi Saturday evening, when upwards of two inches fell.' The fall was the heaviest since 1918, when for three weeks snow, many inches deep lay on the ground, making transport very difficult.
The latest published returns 'for animals in the were presented to the meeting of the New Zealand branches of the Society fo the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Wellington on Wednesday. The figures were as follows: —Sheep, 29,051,382; oxen 3,445,790; horses 298,968; swine 556,735. Total 33,352,890. It is estimated that the combined total of nogs, rabbits, hares and opossums is 17,000.000. making a grand total of 50,000,000.
