The African National Congress obtained permission to bold a meeting limited to members yesterday. After two hours, a police inspector accompanied by three tear gas bombers ordered the meeting to stop. Professor Tharfc temporised vptlu the inspector and said: “‘1 will speak to you outside.’’ After the meeting the inspector arrested Thaolc and released him, on his own recognisances. Interviewed Tliaele said: ‘‘Five hundred sterling lias been placed at our disposal by the Communism Party. Our aim is a black South African Republic. We will employ Europeans to develop the country. V e have got a million members with an average income of twenty thousand, and a hundred and thirty-two chiefs would constitute the Upper House.
