VANCOUVER, June 21
So pleased are the British Columbia lumbermen with Australia’s grant of an extension of her preference on sawn timber that a resolution of appreciation is likely to he proposed when the British Columbia Legislature Member who now is a Dominion House of Commons candidate, stated that it was very encouraging to see Australia following Canada in extending Empire preference. The placing of Canadian cedar on the same basis as California, redwood was especially welcome, but an extension of the preteren.e on cedar was also hoped for.

BATTLESHIPS MODERNISED
WASHINGTON, June 20
The Navy. Department has announced plans for the modernisation of eight more battleships in such a manner that approximately three thousand tons will be added to eacii ship, increasing the total tonnage of tile American capital ships to 475,000 cons, The alienations will comprise mainly deck armour and anti-submar-ine “blisters"
