LONDON, June, Bo'oby Jones, the American won the British Open Golf' Championship. Jones is now known a»:she. robot golfer. He has won the open as well ns amateur championship of Britain in the same year, an achievement not attained by any amateur since John Ball’s victory forty yeqrs agp.
Jones’s four 1 round ‘ figures were 70, 72, 74, 75.
Yesterday’s |Jay was fa\srcsl ..-by. dull, windless' 'weat!]<>i‘'‘"and 'was full of excitemeivC'" Robson disappointed
Thursday’s high British hopes by his surprisingly feeble putting. He took three putts on seven greens in the third round, missing six under two leet. Yet the round revived .the Britishers to the highest pitch of enthusiasm, for Compston picked up five strokes on Bobby Jones by a marvellous record achievement of 68. Hoylake has not seen anything like it. He began amazingly with 4,3, 4,2, and went out in 34, despite a six at the fifth; and he continued inspiringIV, being reminiscent of Duncan at Sandwich in 1930, but after a tremendous ovation be was given at the end of the third round, Compton liirew everything away by a miserable last round, taking 82. His four rounds scores thus were: 74, 73, 68, 82. Jones, throughout the meeting found the first three holes to be a (regular “lniodoo.” He never once played them in decent figures, and his last, two rounds were indifferent, giving chances to others to overtake mm, but those who were within striking distance proved unequal to the occasion.
The leaders were Bobby Jones 291, Biegel 293, MacDonald-Smilh 293, Horton-Smith 290, Robson 296, Compston 297, Barnes 297, Cotton 299. Full scores for the four rounds are:
Diegel 71, 74, 71, 74 —total 293
MacDonald-Smith 70, 77, 76, 71--293.
R obson 71, 72 p 78, 76—596 Horton-Smith 72, 73, 78, 73-290
Barnes 71, 77, 72, 77—29/
With Compston loading after a record round at the end of the third stage from Bobby Jones, the big crowd at the golf championships betaine most excited at the prospect of an English win, but Jones damped the British hopes by getting a three lor tlie second hole, measuring 369 yards, where bis drive hit a spectator on the hostel and the hall rebounded into a bunker; but Jones reached the green with his second, and he holed out with a six yard putt.
Jones took three putts on two greens. Then he took seven strokes at the eighth, where he struck tumble at tlie edge of the green. This is believed to be Jones’ first seven in big competitions for some years. Thus tlie British hopes rose. Jones took .'lB outward, and he went home with 37. Some wonderful recoveries alternated with his poor shots.
Compston had a great chance of restoring the title to Britain, but tlie strain ol" tin* morning round seemed to have made him tired and limp, ITe missed putts, and sliced and pulled
London doctors are once more debating the old question: “Is smoking injurious?” The ■well-worn controversy has been re-opened in the columns of big daily newspapers. Opinion differ, as per usual. Meantime the man In the street continues to puff his cares away, serenely indifferent. He’s not worrying over the verdict. Fact is its all a question of nicotine. Given a tobacco free, or practically free, from the poison, and instead of proving harmful it will be found beneficial. “But where is such tobacco to be had?” you may ask. Why, right here in New Zealand! It’s as free from nicotine as it is possible for it to be. That’s where it differs from the imported article-usually rank with nicotine. The explanation is that it’s toasted. That absoidis the nicotine, develops flavour and aroma, and renders it perfectly harmless! You can smoke it from cock-crow to sunset, and after that, and take no harm. Ask for Riverhead Gold, Cat Plug No. 10, Cavendish or Navy Cut. They are all good!—Advt.
