FEDERAL ATTITUDE

CANBERRA, June 19
During question tiirie in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Frank horde, Acting Minister for Customs, stated that he was not aware of any decision at present by the New Zealand Government to impose a duty on coal from Australia. *
Mr - Fordo stated that .members, of the House could rest assured that the Fullest consideration would be given ;to any claims by the .Dominion of New Zealand in this .respect, as the Commonwealth was desirious of bringing hbout mure satisfactory, trade relations with New Zealand.

McDonald, Chairman of the Northern : Collieries Association has sent the.; following cable message to the; .“Dominion” concerning . the freight concessions on coal,.made by the New South Wales Railways:— “Referring to statements that appeared in the press, ! desire, as Chairman of the Northern Collieries Association. to state that we have oensistently and‘persistently refused to entertain any idea of a bounty on coal production. The coal industry was specially selected in the past for the imposition of. exorbitant charges to make up deficits in the general railway revenue -.and the, present reduction is merely an adjustment to a less inequitable basis. r lhe balance of reduction in price is contributed by the proprietors and th emeu.”
