FINED FOR ASSAULT
WELLINGTON, June 19
Alan Fabian Duerr was convicted fay Mr Pago, S .M., and fined £lO to-day on a cifarge of assaulting Ivy Irene Campbell, a married woman, whose evidence was that accused, uninvited, entered her house alter a short conversation at the door and after displaying his wares, attempted to kins her. Default was lixed at a nHntili. Duerr va/s also convicted and ordered tq .pay costs on a charge of carrying on business ns an unlicensed hawker.
A FIRE
WELLINGTON, June 20
When escaping from a free service station at Khandallali early this morning, J. Travis, one of the proprietors, was overcome by heavy smoke and had to be carried to safety by his partner, H. B. Powell. The two men were sleeping above the station when a fire broke out shortly after 3 o’clock, Powell awakened Travis and the men had to break a window to escape, Travis collapsed; while making his way out, and Powell although himself was affected by the smoke and fumes, dragged him clear. The tire damaged a. stock of new tires, oil and machinery. The building was insured in the South British for £300; Stock in trade in Union for £2OO. The cause of the fire is thought to be a short circuiting ignition on a motor

WELLINGTON, June 19
In reply to a statement made at Wanganui that the Railway Department had done nothing to protect the crossings, the Department challenges its accuracy. It is stated that the Transport Conference had before it a few months ago a design for a portable notice 'with the word “stop” in reflecting letters. This was approved hv the conference, but the material had to he sent, for to construct these notices, and it has not yet arrived. So far from doing nothing, the Department contends it has been very active in the matter.
SPILL IN JUMPING CONTEST
PALMERSTON N., June 20
A heavy spill was sustained by E. R. Locke, of Levin, when competing in the maiden jumping competition at the. National Dairy Show to-day. His mount refused to rise to- the post and rail fence and crashed into the obstacle, somersaulting, and throwing his rider on his head. Locke was hospitailed but the extent of his injuries have not been ascertained.
GAOL FOR- DRUNKEN DRIVER
CHRISTCHURCH, June 20,
Imprisonment for fourteen days with hard labour, and cancellation of his driver’s licence until June 1 1931 was the penalty imposed on George Rne Percy, by Mr Young S.M. oil a charge of being in ciharge of a motor car while in a- state of intoxication. “T have to consider the protection of the public,” said Mr Young, “apparently a fine had no good effect on a previous occasion so that in the public inteiest he cannot he allowed to drive for some time.”
