FINANCIAL STATEMENT

PRIME MINISTER’S FRANKNESS

AUCKLAND, June 17

The Hon P. A. de la Perrclle, Minister of Internal Affairs, this morning •remarked on y.he frankness lor the Prime Minister, the Hon G. W. Forbes, ih letting people know the financial position of the Dominion.

“The Prime Minister’s statement.’’ said Mr de la Porrelle, “has tlm approval of all thoughtful people, while the commendatory references of the Press provide further emphasis. Courageous statements are always desirable.

“It has been suggested in one or two quarters that the statement as .to our finances was but a smoke screen. You can take it from me that the finauc al position was stated by Mr Forbes under clear aitmosplioric conditions, and the true position was given. Nothing was hidden. The people were taken into the full confidence of the Government.

“As to the recent Ivarning to importers, this was done only in fairness to all, and must commend itself to all nght-thinlfing pnoplc. The Government is exhausting every avenue to meet the financial position of the country, and it has placed all the cards on the table AVe all know now what the position is,”
