LONDON NAVAL TREATY
MR- HEARST’H PROPOSAL.
WASHINGTON, June 3
'While the Senate Committee still struggles with the London Naval Treaty, neiv interest in the issue is shown by the reception at Washington, in Britain and in Canada of a proposal, outlined by Mr William Randolph Hearst, in ah' interview given to the Sou.tham Press of Canada.
■ The proposal is to"'scrap the treaty and substitute an Anglo American agreement which would leave both parties free to l build as they like, coupled with a, defensive alliance. -• The interview has been prominently recorded by the press, and Mr Hearst is delighted with its reception bv British newspapers.,- ■
Mr Hearst also strongly supports Empire Free Trade.;., On the question of tariffs his papers recently attacked the Congress .for antagonising Canada and Britain with .the new tariff. The general effect qf the interview is seen as putting Mr Hearst on the side of th 0 British peoples, by whom he was in the past regarded soniew'hat a s a foe of Britain. The interview is likely to give added fighting force to critics of the naval treaty at Washington. «• ; . Mr H. Johnson, member of the Senate for California, is .calling for full details of the diplomatic correspondence concerning the granting by the President, Mr Hoover, of concessions under the treaty to Britain, which Mr C’oolidge refused to allow his delegates to the Geneva Conference of 1927 to accord to Britain.
