THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

THE GRAVITY OF ARAPUNI

The developments -at Arapuni are grave. We do not mean that there is risk to the Waikato; we refer to the protective works that-are necessary and their effect upon the whole future of this great scheme and upon the confidence of the public. It is impossible to say at the present time what may be the cost of making the headworks quite safe—if they can be made so. The powerhouse is to'be closed for an indefinite period, and all that tune this very costly station will be earning co money. Already, apparently expenditure on Arapuni has been a good deal more than was anticipated, and any large addition to the capital cost is a very serious matter. —Auckland Star.
