Caught in the rope nf> a winch, Air A. Copland, the chief officer on the steamer John, had a miraculous escape Prom death when tho vessel was off Cape Egmont, on. Tuesday afternoon. Afr Copland was pulled round twice before the steam could be shut off. His chest was crushed and his hack and right log were injured. The John put hack to AYollinigton Harbour and the injured man, who lives at 39. Langdon Street, Christchurch was taken to the hospital. T 1 is condition is fairly serious.
