rnw.l decision •of the New South Wadies ■ Government, to grant special railway rates on. coal exported to New Zealand, thus granting what is equivalent to an export bounty, lfas been closely watched by the Government and 1 understand that the Hon. W. B. Taverner, who until the recent readjustment of Cabinet duties, was Minister of Customs, commenced to take up the question with a view to protecting the New Zealand coal mining industry if threatened with unfair competition.
i It has' been reported that a munbor of • 1 steamers have already been des-. patched -to Newcastle to load coal for the Dominion, some of which, is needed by gas production plants and is regularly; imported -for that- special purpose. However, it is evident from inquiries in official circles that if the Government is o t opinion that coal importations from Australia aie being conducted on lines which constitute ■ dumping the legislative power in existence to . impose a special dumping duty will be promptly utilised by Cabinet.
