A scientist, Verunt, had at his disposal a squadron of Air Force aeroplanes which went above the clouds, on which was dropped crushed ice. .dessnges record that a shower of rain fell instantly.
A LAUNCHING

Sir T. and Lady Wilford were present at the launching at Newcnstle-on-Tyne of the 228 foot oil burning steam or Matai for the New Zealand Government. She is intended primaily for lighthouse visitation, but has .special accommodation for the Governor’ General’s tour. Ladv Wilford ohirstened the Mntni and wished the ship’s occupants good fortune.
A DIPLOMA GRANTED

Mr E. B. Gunsen of Auckland, has been elected a fellowship of the Royal College of physicians.
SOUTH AFRICAN FINANCE
CAPETOWN, June 11
The Governor of the Reserve Bank in the annual report said the reason for comparatively dear money was a dearht of credit. South Africa was borrowing too much from the banks and spent it on imports. When values of primary products had received siset back but South Africa was better fitted at present to stand a shock than any other country, owing to gold production.,
DEEP SEA RECORD
HAMILTON, (Bermuda) June 11. A new deep sea diving record is claimed for William Beebe, who descended eight hundred feet below the surface in a steel ball with fused quartz windows. The lowest reviously attained was 325 feet. The steel sphere was fitted with apparatus to absorb exhaled air. Telephone conversations were maintained between the surface and the diver who expects to attain half a mile with this apparatus.

The difficult and dangerous reconstruction of the. leaning Tower of Pisa has been successfully completed, One of the columns in the upper part has been removed and a stronger one inserted.
