HAMILTON. June 10.

If has been decided to completely empty the great lake formed by the erection of the Arapuni dam. and as a result, it is anticipated that the Power House will close down to-morrow afternoon. 'the water will then be below the entrance of the penstocks, and the turbines will then cease functioning.

The emptying of the great dam, in the opinion of Air F. W. Furkert (Chief Government Engineer) v ill take fourteen days to accomplish. As the result of the investigations by the diver yesterdayit is reported that the crack between the spillway and Jtho entrance of the penstocks extends for two feet, at a tangent, into the foundations of the weir. The crack tapers lor two inches to a point. 'The crack lias been packed with sacking. Nothing untoward has happened since the crack first appeared.

No remedial measures can be suggested until full investigations have been made

It is understood that the Public Works engineers have decided to concrete the whole of the head race, at the fracture from the main dam to the spillway, a distance of about one mile; also to concrete the cliff and face of the falls below the spillway, and to construct a concrete floor at the base of the falls. This gigantic work will involve the closing of Arapuni for many months and the cost may exceed £250X00.

Auckland Power Board’s Station at King’s whan’t took over its share of Arapuni’s load to-day.
