At the meeting of thej Progress League on Monday night, a discussion ensued on the system of road maintenance. following a point raised by Air -J. ,1. Mclntosh that all turns on a road w ay should be banked on the outside. It was pointed out, particularly on flat roads, that many corners were graded to the centre rather than to the outside, and constituted a source of danger. Generally it was felt there
was too much, grading to the - centre and the high ridge was a source of danger to motor traffic. It was specially objectionable for small cars, and in any case it did not seem desirable to create the high ridge complained of. On corners the ridges created the liai bility to skid which was an added risk especially when passing other traffic. It was decided to bring the matter before the ronding authorities so that some measure of relief would result and the more immediate danger be removed,
At the meeting last evening of tlie Greymouth Harbour Board, the report of the Government Engineer-in-Chief, Air F, W. Furkert, upon the scheme outlined for port improvement by Air Gordon Nic-01, Harbour Engineer, of Aberdeen, Scotland, was presented. It is briefly to the effect that tlie cost of the scheme would approximate £1,000.000, and that' important details are required as to the material and other costs, as well as the nature of tlie' structure proposed. Moreover, it is pointed out by Air Furkert’that soundings show the proposed length of walls would not take the entrance into water as deep as Air Nic-ol presumed to exist’ at that point, so that longer walls would be necessary. To condense my conclusions into a few words, concluded Air 'Furkert, I am of the opinion that to carry out the scheme of works suggested by Air Nieol would ifivolve the Board in an added annual expenditure which it. could not afford for problematic benefits which, under the most- favourable circumstances, could not be expected to attract a trade which would materially compensate for that added expenditure; while, on the other hand, the training wall and lagoon scheme is within the resources of,the Board, will not increase its annual charges in the future. and can confidently be expected to improve the conditions at present existing.
