Official announcements regarding appointments to the Legislative- Council may be-expected within the next few days. d It was originally expected that one of the final official actions of Sir Joseph Ward prior to resigning from the position of Prime Minister would have been to recommend his Excellency th Cl Governor-General to increase the number of Legislative Councillors, as . the nominative legislative body has been reduced to 38. though the custom has been to maintain. its numbers at a little over half 'of the numerical strength of the House of, Rep resent at i /t-T.

At least six new councillors are to be appointed,' and it is an open secret that in making the recommendations the new Prime fillister • (Mr Forbes) is following the desires of his former leader, who would have made these? appointments had he remained in,office until the opening of the session. I'he ifejt of [pr obable new councillors is expected to include gentlemen of a wide range of interests.

. The Hon. J>. Bud do, former member for Kaiapoi and an ex-Minister of the Crown, may he regarded as a certainty, also Mr Robert Masters, tho ex-member for Stratford, a well known Taranaki business man and chairman of the Transport Advisory Council, which has now gone out of existence. Others are Mr John Tervethick, a retired Auckland business man. actively associated with public •affairs; Mr R. McCallum, who. was for many years member lor Wairau and is prominent in.;the administration of university and primary 'education; Air R. A. Anderson, C.M.G., manager of \\ ard and Co., Invercargill, who has a long public career in Southland to his credit; and Mr Mark Fagan, a veteran Miners’ Union leader from the West Coast of the South Island.
