OVERSEER’S MONTHLY REPORT,

Sir, —I have the honour to report upon the progress of work during the month of May.

NORTHERN RIDING

Ivumara to Ivapitea Chesterfield South Bank. The Contractor has made good progress with the formation and metalling which will be completed by .June 12th. Malfroy’s Bridge Repairs. This work was continued to completion under the direction of 'Bridge Foreman Reynolds, the following defective timber being removed and -replaced with inner heart of rimu timber, 12xG,1/j6' chord member; 'l4x7 transoifres" 11/14; struts Bxlo ,2/1.4; diagonal under bracing 6x4, 20/18; struts 7x4, 5/14; Chord bracing- 7x4, 'B/14 ; 'decking Bx 4, 15/16; handrailing 5x2, 14/20. Defective spacing blocks in the lower chord.*), 10x0 heart of 1 rimu, were removed- and replaced with 9x6 hardwood. Teh thirteen feet x 14 inch'diameter‘tension 'rods were removed and replaced with 10/13 feet by 1 \ diameter rods. Thpck repairs were in hand- on the 13th of the month and to date the track has been repaired and cleared over a distance of 3 miles! Several portions of corduroy wer G repaired, defective covering -of several culverts renewed, and bad holes on the track surface rendered- passable to horse traffic. „ • •

Malfroy’s Bridge Protection. A quantity of manuka sc-ruib was cut on the Christchurch Road in leadiness for cartage when 'a. lorry is available.

MAINTENANCE,

Kumar a Beach. Road was cleared of blackberry and gors e "and grass grown chter sides removed ‘ with the power grader 'between the'"railway"line and P. McDonald’s Holding! The watertable on the hill side blocked by growth and small slips,, was 'cleaned and' reopened to the 'foot'of the hill. ■

CENTRAL: RIDING

Kokatahi Bridge Protection. ~ The river banks above the bridge was protected with a manuka scrub and stone fascine enclosed in a wire not secured at dx feet centres with three and.; four-ply twisted No § galvanised wire 1 roues- fastened to sunken anchors, r fifteen feet back froth the top of the buttered bank.. The bettered bank above the fascine was. sheathed with dnaimkn scrub for 200 links in length thee- loaded fascine being constructed : for the same distance.

Stvx " River" Track. The track was cleared and made passable for horse traffic for one mile in length, slips removed, creeking crossings repaired, tail'd a very narrow point partly widened. •

er AINTENANCE

Repairs were effected with gravel to Municipal, McArthur; Hokitika Flat, Wliitcombe Valley, Weir’s, iO’Veill’s. Word, the southern end of Station Road, Arthurstown and South Hokitika Roads. Water tables were cleaned on Seddon’s Terrace," Hoki-tika-Hau Hau,'and Hau Hau Roads. Encroaching gorse and blackberry was cleared from Hokitika-Hau Hail, Arthurstown. Kanieri Train, and South Hokitika Roads. The power grader was engaged grading and raking ruts on Arthurstown and Station ißoads. An 18 inch diameter concrete pipe culvert was construoted on Municipal Rond replacing! a defective covered culvert. Defective decking was removed and replaced on a 80 feet bridge on McArthur Road. The eastern side drain on Wall road along the frontage of W. T ves holding was .-Cleaned and widened 'where necessary. A quantity of gravel was carted- and spread on. the site of the pump Station at Kanieri. Concrete pipe construction was continued at Kanieri. i I

SOUTHERN RIDING.

Petersen . :Rond Metalling.- 'This work was advance’d a further 700 links/during- the month, making a total completed length of 21 chains ’in the present contract. • , ; Poerpa -South Bank (Cron’s Road). This lias' been signed for, and the work will commence on June 2nd. Richardson Road and Bridge. The timber and iron work are at the bridge site, and the work of pile driving? should commence on June 9th.

.Graham Road. This work should start on June 2nd. the contract having been signed for.

M A TNTEN ANCE,

The . Roadman effected repairs to motor worn holes and depressions on Wanganui Flat. Robertson and Petersen Roads, and commenced with the work of re.uairs on Wanganui Gorge Track. Repairs were effected +o portions of Detour and Wataroa Flat Roads and a quantity of gravel carted out by No 1 lorry and dumped at intervals on Detour Road for future renairs. A section of drain ,on Loan Block Road was completed a. distance of' 6">o links. A quanity of sea beach gravel was carted by No. 2 lorry and placed on Okarito Road; sections of watertables were also cleaned and encroaching scrub clear-

<>d from the roadside for filty chains in length. Heart of rimu stringers and decking were carted to Waitalia Beach Road in readiness for. repairs to two culverts.

REPORT ON SECONDARY HIGHWAYS.

Sir, —I have th e honour to report upon the progress of Works oh -the Secondary Highways for the .-month of May.

liower Kokatahi-McAi-thur Road. Repairs' were effected to scours, motor worn holes and depressions from Kanieri to. Municipal Road covering, a distance of 11 miles, and absorbing 131 cubic yards of gravel. A light coat of fine gravel was also placed on the road surface from Kanieri to above the Lake -Road intersection, a distance of 56 chains, 40 cubic yards- of material being used for Hie purpose. The power grader was used in - re-surfacing from Kanieri to Kokatahi Bridge, a -distance of 7. miles 50 chains; also in heavily grading the grass grown outer sides of the , road, and restoring displaced metal and gravel from Graham's Corner to Municipal Road, a, distance of 3 miles. The ten ton roller was Used to consolidate loose material ftorn - Graham's Hotel to beyohd Harris Creek Bridge, a distance of 2 miles. Defective decking was removed .Mid retd need on Kokatahi Bridge totalling 10/16x6x4, 426.8 superficial feet of inner heart of rimu timber. In addition, roadside dumps were replenished with 175 cubic yards of gravel. Encroaching gorse and blackberry growth was cleared from ihe northern side of the road for 200 links in length at the Outlet Bridge, one mile peg; and for'2so links in length 'between Graham’s Greek Bridge and Upper Kokatahi Road intersection, 7 mile peg.

Upper Kokatahi Road. Motor worn holes and depressions were repaired with gravel from Graham’s Hotel for a distance of 34 miles, 149 cubic yards of fine material being used. Roadside dumps'were replenished where necessary - with 57 cubic yards of gravel. ' - The -. power grader was used in regrading the road surface and replacing loose gravel displaced by traffjc, in readiness for rolling; also in heavily grading the outer grass grown sides to allow- drainage to be shed more readily, from Graham’s Hotel for a distance of 3 miles. The ten - ton road roller operated on the road 'ftffcnr grading and repairing over. a distance of 3 miles 50 chains. . Lake Kanieri Road. The power grader was used in restoring the road .surface for a distance of 4 miles from Knnferi. Motor worn holes were repaired with gravel from the roadside dumps covering a distance of 7 miles, 123 cubic yards of grave] being used for. the purpose.'. Waterfcables were (deaned on the hill sides a d. stance o.f 400 links. Encroaching scrub thd blneklHjrry were’ cleared from the roadside a distance of 900 links. A small slip was removed,from the vnterinble on Boucher’s Hill, and scours repaired on several of the sleeper grades.
