NEW ZEALAND COAL
IMPORTATION OF AUSTRALIAN COAL.
ißy Telegraph—Press Association).
WELLINGTON, June 10
It would appear the alarm expressed by the West Coast miners, with regard to the possible importation of cheap Australian coal into New Zealand, is premature. Although it is possible future development may give rise to some concern the view is expressed in certain directions that it may bo necossnry ,for the Government to consider the imposition of a duty on Australian coal in order to protect the industry in New Zealand. It was learned from an authoritative somre that the Government had not so far considered the question of duty, but it is watching the position very carefully, Six colliers are now loading at Newcastle for New Zealand ports and it is this fact that has probably given rise: to alarm on the West Coast hut it has been ascertained very little of these shipments will he for household consumption. Gas companies use New Zealand coal as much as possible. but it is necessary for them to import some.
