AUCKLAND, June 9

Obituary—Dr J. Giles, aged 97 years. He was a surgeon in the Crimean War and a friend of Florence Nightingale. He went to Gabriel’s Gully goldfields, and suhseuentily was editor of the “Southern Cross” magazine. He was a warden on the West Coast, a magistrate at Wanganui, and from 1888 to 1893 was magistrate at Auckland.

Dr Giles was a well-known magistrate and warden in the earlier days of Hokitika; a noted scholar who took a keen interest in. the welfare of the district, especially in educational matters. He owned the well-known residence on Rolleston Street, now occupied by Mr H. Swency. Later Dr Giles was transferred to Wanganui, and then to Auckland where he retired from the service and has since resided.
