BOOKMAKER FIXED

CHRISTCHURCH, June 5. At tlq* Magistrate’s Court, Alexander Forsyth, a labourer, wlm pleaded guilty in a charge of bookmaking was lined £2O sterling and was allowed fourteen days in which to pay. The Chief Den -.ivc said Forsyth was caught hooxmnking at Addington I rots on Tuesday. SPORTS GROUND VALUATIONS WELLINGTON, June 0. Great concern is expressed in Wellington at the increases in valuation and rates on sports grounds. It was generally thought the Act of 1925 had fixed values at nominal prices. The, Valuer-General, however, holds that the reduction is only to the extent lie chooses to fix, and lie puts it at onc--11u!f the ordinary selling price, with a continual increase in valuation. This is held to be useless, and sports bodies are frightened at the increase in rates caused by the' new’valuations. The only wav out at present is to appeal and demand that the fixed value be settled at once and for all. so long as the ground is not used for profit.
