GISBORNE, June 4

At the inquest on the body of John Alexander McDonald, retired borough and hailioiir engineer, who was round this morning with a bullet wound in the head, evidence was given that deceased was very depressed through dl health and was suffering acutely. On a pedestal at his bedside a constable found a note from deceased, written to bis wife, asking her to forgive him. He could not stand the pain any longer. The Coroner returned a verdict of death due to laceration of the brain, caused by a. bullet wound, selfinflicted, while in a state of acute menial depression. INVERCARGILL, June 4.

Joint Ale-Connochie, single, aged 46 farmer at Lochiel. was found dead in a paddock this afternoon with his throat cut. Deceased was a returned soldier and had been gassed. He had been in indifferent health for some time.
