SHOULD THE STATE HELP THE STAGE?
“I was not horn to ho a moneymaker and my income would arouse derision !U musical comedy circles, but to carry on in this precarious pro less ion with out a break for twenty years is something to be grateful for. 1 have at least proved that there is a large audience for sane entertainment and for the best tilings in drama. I have proved also that its provision is a large task for a small organisation to carry through unaided. Revision of taxation and some modest assistance from a wise government woo'd go far to removing difficulties. If I had made out a case for that, f shall feel that my and work will not he found to have been altogether a failure.”—Sir Nigel Playfair.
